Libertarian

We recently had an Ontario general election on October 10th. Yet again the major outcome was that the Ontario Liberal party maintained their majority. But there were two other outcomes that I was more interested in.

First was the vote for or against the mixed member proportional representation. Many people had no idea what this new process was. And those who attempted to understand the system either found some clarity but were not sure or were more confused. Why? Because the explanations that were provided, spoke in terms that left you feel you were going in circles.

Basically the Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform, was created to assess the current first-pass-the-post electoral system. They saw the MMP system working in other areas and thought that maybe this was the change that the voters needed to create greater voter turn out. Maybe the lesson learned is that if you want voters to come out to vote educate them properly and far in advance for a possible new system. Confusing the majority of the people is not going to make them want to come out and vote especially if you are trying to get younger voters out there.

All I have to say is thank god we didn’t get the new system. It would create many political problems by creating many minority governments based on people that were literally not voted in, in the first place.

Second major outcome -for me- was that my weak little party gained some percentage points in this past vote. The Ontario Libertarian party had its most candidates (25) since the 1990s. We only gained 0.21% of the popular vote, but it was a positive move for the party.

In the standings we fell in behind the family coalition. The family coalition, come on this party can get that many votes eh. Yes a party that opposes divorce except for infidelity, sex outside of marriage, commercialization of sex, sequential monogamy, domestic partnerships, and same-sex marriage there is a great party. Come on religious extremist that believe that homosexuals are the problem with our society should be forbidden to even exist let alone be voted for. How is not letting gay/lesbians couples getting married affect you directly? Enjoy your marriage and forget the others, family coalition, HA!

This brings us back to my party the libertarians. Libertarianism supports all civil liberties and opposes all attempts by government to reshape its citizens' lives. In the economic area, Libertarianism challenges the right of government to restrict trade in any way, or to force citizens to support through taxes projects they will not willingly support on the free market. Also believes in the right for citizens to have the ability to question the government that is serving them.

The Libertarian answer is that government power must be used only to protect the individual from the use of force or fraud by others.

Finally they hold the idea that a private citizen is able to do what they want when they want as long as it does not affect anyone else negatively or break any laws. Basically if I am doing something in my backyard and it doesn’t break laws or bother my neighbor then there is no reason why I can not continue to do so.

So if you believe that you should be able to do what you want without others bothering you, or that you do not want to pay taxes to a project you do not support then maybe you should take a look at this http://www.libertarian.ca/index.html. It is an interesting party not saying that it is the best overall as it is weak on certain levels but then again aren't they all? At least they are not ready to wage war or destroy the world and people in it just to make money. But unlike other parties it has a something different; an idea of freedom.

Which brings up next time there are many parties that could co-exist as one to make one party that would consider all those involved and create policy and follow procedures with everyone in mind and not just the focus on what will continue party funding and get politicians more votes in the next election.
