Pathetic.

Day in and day out we all take things for granted, it is part of human nature it seems or at least it seems that we have allowed it to become this way. Those of us that reside in wealthy nations do it all the time in one form or another. How many times do we stop and think about how great we have it and how many don’t? I know personally we attempt to as much as we can and do what we can but it is not enough.

Our time in history is one of the most affluent, especially here in the west. We are feeling the pinch of a financial downfall at the moment but nothing close to the 30’s or the hardships felt in third world nations each day.

We (North America) have been involved in a war in the Middle East for many years. It has provided some success, although it may have been started for various reasons and through some lies, it still produced some positive outcomes. But the numbers of fallen soldiers and innocent victims is nowhere near any of the world wars. Added to that the socioeconomic times we have are far greater then those who preceded us.

We over eat and drink while others fetch water from a well and must eat food we would turn in disgust from. We have more objects and items for entertainment than necessity while others have shelter and nothing more. We have more clothing and footwear for every activity and outing while others don’t even own one pair of shoes.

"I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."
~Chuck Paulinick~

In a round about way the quote states that we have it all but we waste it chasing things we don't need. Oh I know we all know this and that I am pointing out obvious examples but it will all be forgotten in a few minutes once we distract ourselves. Last week I followed the Mumbai incident as it unfolded. People died needlessly and we see it all the time and it is a passing news story. More die in Iraq, protesters or enraged in Pakistan, Nigeria and the list goes on.

My point? Do you know what the most disgusting, frustrating, embarrassing, and disgraceful article I read was?

"Wal-Mart worker trampled to death."

Why? Because last Friday was Black Friday in the U.S. "Come on out and get some great deals people!" That’s right the biggest shopping day of the year.

A person died from shopping!!!? Are you fuc*kin kidding me! What the fu*k…?

I personally make a conscious effort to stay away from Wal-Mart because of their practices, but the blame here sits on the shoulders of the people stampeding into the store to SHOP! I hope every single person that ran into that store lives the rest of their lives with utter guilt and hatred for themselves that they can hardly help from vomiting when they look in the mirror each and every day.

Come on Forts who are you kidding? Those who do care will feel some remorse but others that were there that day will simply chalk it up as an unfortunate accident, because really it is an unfortunate accident. Now don't get me wrong we should all be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour but there is a limit.

And it does not remove the fact that in North America one of our top stories and tragedies is "Wal-Mart worker trampled to death" so that we can shop, shop, shop. Sick!
As North Americans many of us are truly pathetic.

You know the stickers and patches that say "Mean People Suck"? I think we might just have to alter it to;
North American People Suck!

Stuck In The Middle Yet Again.

White powder and suspicious packages had the center block (original building that stands between our east and west 12 floor towers) of the Bank of Canada closed for business yesterday. The package was left in the early morning hours directly in front of the doors entering the building. The men in green (Hazmat) were dispatched and the robot went to work attempting to decipher the contents of the package.

It turned out that the package was not a bomb but possibly a case of Bananas resulting in a great deal of lost time, traffic disruption and one hell of an expensive training session for all the emergency services personnel involved. But it did start some interesting conversations the idea of feeling safe or not.

This is similar to that of the abortion clinic package from a couple weeks ago. The interesting thing about the conversation these events spawn are the utter frustration people have with one another as one group states the other is to paranoid and the paranoid people are insulted and pissed off at those who are indifferent. This is common in these situations and many of those who stay and work and don’t leave seem to think that those who leave are a) taking advantage of the situation and just want the time off for free. Or b) they are being paranoid of something that is ‘probably’ nothing.

First thing about this is if I can get some time off with my bosses consent and I don’t have to use my time for it then wouldn’t anyone take that??? Who dosen’t want more time off? Don’t get me wrong I like to work and have a good work ethic but I do not live to work, I work so I can get the money I need to live and do the fun stuff I like while I am not at work.

The second thing is this, if someone does not feel comfortable in a situation it is their right to state so and remove themselves from the situation if they so desire. If given the opportunity don’t you think that those "paranoid" people in Oklahoma would have wanted the chance to say "I don’t feel comfortable and want to leave"? May they rest in peace.

The images (like the one above) of that horrible day are tattooed on all our minds as one of the most tragic forms of malicious attack we have seen. When these historic moments are in our mind and then we flash back to what many people felt here in the Bank yesterday, it puts things into perspective.

Now I am not saying that every time something happens people should run and hide and nor should they be blinded by fear mongering and propaganda. But at the same time when an individual feels uneasy and uncertain of the outcome of unknown motives of others they should not be ridiculed for it. I mean there was a suspicious package with white powder in the vicinity.

So this leaves me stuck in the middle as I was not paranoid or overly concerned yesterday but I will admit that I was not completely comfortable knowing that there was at least the possibility of a grave outcome. It is a fine line between thinking the ski is falling and being oblivious to the possibility of someone claiming a new target. Where do you stand?

I’ll have a Veinte, iced, cinimon, spilt shot espresso, mint, mocha frappe, latte, crappe, dappe, with a hint of a frothy loan, thanks…

The times they are a changing, we all need to get out there and help our local little guy and BUY! BUY! BUY! All the grassroots protestors need to ban together and hit the streets to get the word out. Signs need to go up, flyers must be passed around and for the love of god let the press in on it.

The issue? There is a company that is in dire need of our support so that it can continue to exist on the small scale that it has for years. Already jobs have been lost and stores have been closed. We need to make sure this does not continue or the company will tank for certain. It is our duty to help out these individuals…

Oh no wait sorry my mistake must have been the cold I have and the breakfast martinis I consumed with my lucky charms this AM. The profits are falling as is the status as one of the most affluent companies in the U.S.

That’s right Starbucks is having trouble. My thought; good, for a few reasons 1. it annoys me that I see one on every single corner when I go to work. 2; they are not a very good role model in the areas of environmental stewardship nor are they to be revered for their treatment of those who pick the addictive coffee bean. 3. Their utter monopolization with cut throat (smart business) tactics of buying out leases of their smaller competitors and adding a shop every few hundred meters to not allow others to open shop. Good business for them bad for the little guy and the market as a whole.

But in all honesty who would have thought that we would be reading an article like this; "SO the froth has been blown off Starbucks' profits." Although it is a cheesy play on words it is still the bold (sorry couldn’t help myself I guess) truth that is now facing the gargantuan Starbucks franchise.

The article itself outlines how the Coffee juggernaut has actually lost 97% of their profit in the fourth quarter. The company has attempted to mitigate this loss by "…cutting nearly 1,000 non-retail jobs and closing 600 outlets, including 61 of its 84 cafés in Australia.

This seems to be interesting trend that is affecting many larger corporations and many having their starts in the U.S. Obviously the markets volatility is not helping anyone but usually the big guys are not hit this hard. In this case that isn’t the only factor. It seems that many individuals have simply lost interest as research is showing less traffic to these outlets.

Regardless I personally attempt to stay away from Starbucks and purchase more fair-trade an help out local coffee shops but must admit the Grande bold pulls me in from time to time.

Prediction

It is never easy to make predictions unless you have a decent amount of information and insight to base it on. When it comes to politics, and more specifically, voting there are many factors that need to be considered.
Tomorrow’s election is a rather big event for the U.S. and is probably one the biggest decisions American’s have had to make in many years. Tomorrow’s result will be of one with major consequences. McCain gets in probably more of the same. Obama gets in he needs to ensure that there is proper and timely change. Either way, the incumbent and his staff will be taking on one of the toughest jobs during one of the worst times in history for the U.S.
Does Obama have this election in the bag? HELL NO! Although he is behind this does not mean that McCain can’t have a comeback. Early polling numbers are just that, early. They do not necessarily represent all those who are coming out. Yesterday they stated that of roughly 27 million in the early vote showed Obama as the leader. Unfortunately that number is less then ten percent of the U.S. population.
With the research I did and the help of CNN’s calculator, here is my prediction (and hope) for tomorrow’s election. I think that in the end it will be closer then this, but with many ‘Red’ States showing a decline in their allegiance to the Republican Party it will be interesting to see. But again we must wait. Mine is the second one and can see that unfortunately I could not use the ‘undecided’ or ‘leaning’ options.

Get out there and Play!

Unless you have lived in a war torn country you don’t know what it is like to live your life in fear and uncertainty. You will never know how you will feel when you are confronted by disconcerting situations. You will never know what it feels to be unsure when a bomb will go off or armed police will start shooting in the streets. But in our post 9/11 world North Americans have felt a very small level of what hostile country citizens must live in on a daily basis. And in Canada we are even further removed and less affected as those in obviously New York City for example.

Ok where am I going with this? Simply put I felt a terrifying feeling yesterday with the uncertainty of needing to be concerned or not. Day in and day out I see protesters continuing on their vigil while opposing the existence of an abortion clinic in downtown Ottawa. Personally while I applaud their tenacity to continue their silent protest and believe in freedom of protest, I also disagree in their prolife argument.

But these are not the people that gave me the odd felling. The sinking feeling came on as I left the gym on lunch. My gym is located in a adjacent building to the abortion clinic but exits on a perpendicular street. As I came out I could see flashing lights from fire trucks, police cruisers and police on motorbikes cruising down an empty street that is usually consumed by downtown rush hour traffic. I was told immediately to walk the opposite way I was going.

Once I made my way around I was told what the there had been a suspicious suitcase that was tossed from a vehicle on the sidewalk directly in front of the abortion clinic. The clinic is situated only two blocks from our parliament buildings and a few hundred meters from the Bank of Canada, a great spot to make a statement.

In the end it turned out to be nothing but someone’s garbage they believe. Was it also an attempt to send a message to the staff at the clinic as; ‘you never know’? Who knows as that is merely an assumption. But the idea that there was possibly a massive bomb a few hundred meters from my desk not only made me feel uneasy but also made me think about those who deal with this as a daily norm.

The weirdest thing this week was the feeling of somewhat respect for John McCain. Not McCain now but over 30 years ago when his plane was shot down in Vietnam. I read an article over the weekend about his service and thought there was something more to this man. He fought for his country and what he believed was right and didn’t try to weasel his way out of it.

Of course this quickly turns as the article was about his alleged ‘torture’ from his captures. Supposedly there is disbelief in McCain’s accounts. Add to that; this was a long time ago and he is not the same man now and the idea of respecting him would be in the same column as respecting a baseball player that has a contract substantially higher then that of the budget of some third world nations.

Finally; speaking of that, the confusing and somewhat pathetic comment of the week pertains to baseball. How I never really thought of this as stupid before I have no idea. First thing baseball is never on in my home, and for good reason. But this morning watching the highlights I heard that the "World" series was postponed during a 2 all tie! What could have been the reason to stop such an important game?

Was there a brawl leaving only pitchers able to swing a bat? (Although I have been told that one of the pitchers actually hit a home run! Well done, can’t believe it is so hard for them (pitchers) to hit that ball, you’d think by this point in their lives they would have figured out what 10 year old kids do every single day).

Did a craved fan run out on the field and shoot some players? Did the umpires walk off the field stating that they would not work until their contracts were negotiated? Did someone steal all the plates? Or was it locusts falling from the sky and Moses himself parting the urinal troth in the men’s bathroom?

Nope it rained. Yup that’s right baseball players don’t play in the rain not really sure why that is actually. I mean really these are the guys that would make fun of soccer but at least these guys can take a little dampness. I mean if it was really that important of a game would you not have played in the rain?

And you can not make the argument that the ball would be slippery and ruin the game. You ask any receiver, kicker, quarterback…that has ever played at Lambeau Field in -20 weather what is like throwing or catching a ball in those conditions. Or soccer players that play 90 minutes on a cold wet pitch in Northern England.

Come on play in the rain you bunch of Nancy’s.

A Responsible Steward.

I hate spending money on foot apparel unless they are for hiking, biking, or running. I own many pairs of the previously mentioned footwear for the varying uses. Work or ‘stylish’ shoes is where I tend to pinch that penny till it almost turns to dust - this is not an exaggeration. I would basically buy cheap brown leather shoes and would wear them thin. The back-up that I kept in my work cabinet was a pair of brown Doc Martins, yes I said it, that I have for over 10 years now. That is penny pinching where it counts.

While purchasing some much needed running socks, I happened to notice the Keen walking shoes wall and found the answer to my dilemma. Brown durable leather shoes for walking around town and an appropriate style for work. But I left the store trying to make myself believe that my old Docs were still good enough and didn’t need replacing. But several more miles in the old shoes told me different.

I have always liked Keen sandals even though I had never owned a pair myself. I found that their ongoing pursuit of making durable footwear adventurers was only trumped by their passion of making them through environmental, social, and corporate responsible ways. I learnt a great deal about the company while selling them at Trailhead.

But that was not where they stop. Keen supports workers rights organizations that assist in attempting to maintain said rights. They fund raise and donate vast amounts of money that is set aside from portions of their budget. Keen also moved sustainability to higher echelons by looking into their buildings right down to creating a smaller and 100% recyclable shoe box.

I decided to try them on and only after a few minutes I was hooked as they seemed extremely comfortable and the style suited me well. I think the other major reason was that I knew I was standing in shoes that were made with many elements of sustainability, human rights and human assistance in mind. Even when I noticed later that the tag stated ‘Made in China’ I decided to ask the company why this was and sent them an email.

Not expecting a response as many corporations wouldn’t even give you the time of day. Not only did I get a response but I received a personal response that outlined my concerns and informed me of the company’s initiatives and hopes to change this process as it moves along. I was extremely impressed and have created a dialogue which as Ash from Keen states "this is the only way change takes place" [through dialogue].

During the discussion Ash lamented similarly to my own feelings understanding that in North America we too often are swept up by marketing tools and do not stop to look into what we are actually purchasing. I make mistakes and sometimes by those things that I know I shouldn’t but for the most part I attempt to buy right and buy smart only when buying new is necessary.

They are a company that make an affordable shoe (my Briggs were only $119) that you can feel good about buying. Check out the Keen site for the entire history as I can not do them complete justice here.

Bush League!

After a conversation I had with my wife I decided to think deeply into the future. For those of you closest to me, you already know that I can see into the future and am rarely wrong at any prediction I make. Please stop laughing you know it’s true! Anyway if you can stop laughing long enough I would like to state my latest revelation and prediction.

First; during my children’s’ lifetimes (if I end up having any that being a scary thought on its own) they will be required to live in a land so raped and ravished that the ‘climate change’ affects we are witnessing now will seem like a tiny drop in the bucket.

Before I go further I want to get something out of the way it is something that I need to say but is not extremely easy. Alright ready for this? I am serious this is a really, really big one. Just warning you is all. Bush Jr. -the type of man that would gladly build an empire on the backs of the less fortunate and much less white- is actually an amazing politician and quite intelligent. Ok sorry intelligent is going to far but more like hmmm; crafty and deceitful yeah that seems about right.

Yes I said it, he is quite the politician. Why am I giving him credit? Remember just the other day when I mentioned that when entering the political realm to win and win fast one can choose simply remove morality from ones decisions? See this applies to the goofy child president 100%.

More background before my predication. About two years ago Bush attached a bill stating that domestic (U.S.) oil refinement should commence in the North, in wildlife preserves no less. Not all senators would vote for this especially Democrats. So the crafty prick and his malevolent staff, attached a Northern drilling initiative to a bill concerning funding for soldiers in Iraq.

Now what representative in his/her right mind would not financial support the troops? So if you wanted to support the troops funding which is required then you also had to support the drilling NOT REQUIRED! Through some political washing and shaking, the bill did not pass for the Alaskan and Artic drilling policy, thank god.

But leave it to increasing gas prices to initiate a full blown Republican Party mass orgy. They are literally salivating with the opportunity to not only secure votes but to make it seem that they are doing what is best for Americans, the American economy, and reduce their dependence on foreign oil.

What is the only thing they are missing for said orgy? -other then the ten thousand gallons of KY jelly. A compromise with democrats and to ensure an accurate policy so that they can still get at least partial drilling for future areas.

Any way think of this all part and parcel; Bush wanting to drill a few years ago. The republicans wanting to reduce rising fuel prices and stating that domestic drilling is the answer. Add to this the idea that the war in the middle east was greatly founded on ‘big energy’.

So what is the prediction? Bush ends his reign of power and control as of January 09’. After leaving his office it isn’t like he will become a Wall-mart greater -although it would be appropriate as Wall-mart has obviously relinquished their morals many, many years ago. Nope I believe that Bush will have a connection to any of the oil companies pumping black gold from nature reserves in Alaska.

We will only hear about it years and years later as they will state "there seems to be a connection from oil company x and former president Bush. No one can make the claims for sure but it would seem that his initiatives while still in office were directly linked to his personal gain." I guess one good thing is that if the company ever needs to club some seals or kill some elk to get them out of the oil rig areas Bush can lend a hand and I am sure that Cheney and his ‘deadly shot’ would be available.

Alternatives is the answer not more drilling and this needs to happen. Drilling for more oil merely lines the pockets of greedy little monsters like Bush. Oil is a non-renewable resources and for those in the same mind set as Bush that means when it is gone, it is gone! Leaving absolutely nothing for future generations and worse yet, leaving the earth dried and used like a…well you get the idea.

Unacceptable!

I didn’t want to be negative today but it is hard when nothing changes and those in power simply don’t fucking care. While I studied politics there was one message, amoung others, that rung through all the time. A Prof. once told us "To be a great politician you have to remove morality from all decisions that you make. Your goal is votes and funding do whatever it takes to get them." Now he did not follow or promote this as he was on the side of those guys willing to fight for the better of everyone and not just their party or themselves.

But his fact holds true and this is why politicians DO NOT CARE! And is the other reason why there are so few stories about people like Charlie Wilson for example. The G8 summits are a prime example of ‘great politicians’ -under the aforementioned description- as they have always been under scrutiny for the G8’s apparent lack of progress making it seem merely an excuse for Annex-1 nation leaders to gather for some R&R and dine on exquisite food paid for by the consistently bent over tax payers.

As they gather to hold their talks there is always a key issue at the top of the agenda. This session is focused on the world’s food shortage with specific reference to Africa. These talks are held in some of the most lavish hotel and conference centers or 5 star restaurant. While they discuss this devastating trend they were treated to an eclectic lunch and dinner that when combined came up to 18 COURSE! What was on the menu? Only the best salmon, caviar, lamb and the like.

This was taken from this article
"Just two days ago, Gordon Brown was urging us all to stop wasting food and combat rising prices and a global shortage of provisions. But yesterday the Prime Minister and other world leaders sat down to an 18-course gastronomic extravaganza at a G8 summit in Japan, which is focusing on the food crisis."

What they should have been eating is rice and filthy water even though it would not be anywhere near what it is like for this mother life while she holds her child as he dies of starvation. But then again what do we expect from these leaders from some of the most affluent countries? Specifically here in North America of course, were we have such a gluttonous society that we actually have an OBESITY EPEDEMIC, that is simply deplorable.

I mean how can you expect the leaders to help Africa when there are children like this in North America. Hope your still love’in in a few years chubs as when you have diabetes and chronic heart conditions where will Ronald be? Don’t think there is a transplant kit in the happy meal just yet.

Bottom line I am not stating that I am perfect I can do better but I attempt to be an environmental steward as it is not hard to do. I try to donate to worthy causes. I am a member of Amnesty International. But with no help from those who lead us we are left to wonder what impact are we having really? I guess that is the answer itself. We do the best we can in our lives and we can be happy knowing that we did the very best to make change and help everyone and everything as a whole. We can not ignore it, it is all our problem, especially us in North America.

One who should be commended is LISA SMITH-BATCHEN. She is an ultrarunner who runes distances well over 300miles, 600 and now 800 to raise money for worthy causes. Her latest is to run 810 miles to raise awareness and funding for the food shortages in Africa. We need more people like Lisa and in our own individual ways we can.

Unity!

I was lucky enough to be attending the debate where this picture was taken. It was hard but I was able to hear some of what they said;
Obama "…just think of it when we are in the White House bill won’t be the only cheating Clinton."
Hilary "Oh crap here comes Nader, I will meet you in your tour bus after Bill is tucked in." *I am only paraphrasing and that is not an exact quote.

Yup we all knew it was coming it was just a matter of time. Both former rivals Clinton and Obama are joining forces and for the first time took the stage together as allies. Of course they wouldn’t use any hidden or for that matter apparent messages would they? Nope just the name of the town they have decided to gather together for the first time happened to be wait for it…come on just wait…one more….ok…Unity, NH. Come ON!

Sorry I am not sure if it was really that subliminal. Guess it wasn’t meant to be, just like the posters stating CHANGE with the picture of the possibly first black president next to the oversize font. Of course there were some classic remarks that even the most simple of people could foresee.

For instance when Clinton stated; "Unity is not only a beautiful place, as we can see, it's a wonderful feeling, isn't it?" But she also said a few more important things as well. Since Clinton dropped out of the race not long ago she has since introduced Obama to her chief fundraisers and today she assured that their journey together now "will end on the steps of the capital as Barack Obama takes the oath of office as the next president."

One of the major backlashes that the Democrats fear is the possible lack of support from those who were so enthusiastically supportive of Clinton. Will they go for Obama? Or will they feel betrayed and let down? Thus leaving them to turn to the dark side of politics; Republican army. I certainly hope not but it can and has happened in the past.

Of course the McBush campaign is running strong with their biggest weapon in full view; The Fear Machine. Most level headed people would have denounced lobbyist Black for his comments (about terrorism helping the candidates campaign). But not McCain nope he actually supported him. What makes this worse is that the cable news networks and commentators said the only thing that Black did wrong was actually say it out loud - this isn’t a surprise as fear sells.

This will be the running theme throughout the rest of the election. And one can only imagine that this will crumble the foundation of the Democratic party. When McCain and Obama go head to head, national security will be the deciding factor.
Obama’s stance on war and foreign policy in this area appear weak to those who are not looking at the big picture. These are the same people that would rather vote in McCain and live in a recession to feel safe from the ‘boogeyman’. The machine of fear and terror will prevail. I assure you. McBush and the fear machine in 08.

Great Mind Gone & the Possible Induction of an Evil One.

Late Sunday night I saw on the news that a great icon had passed away at the age of 71. Yup George Carlin died at hospital after complaining about chest pains. Carlin was best known for his honest, intelligent and harsh comedy that overflowed with colourful expletives. He is considered one of the funniest comics of all time that has inspired many and just last week had been given the Mark Twain Prize for lifetime achievement in humor.

But although Carlin was a comedic genius, there was a great deal more to his comedy then just laughs. His word play, sarcasm, wit and knowledge of language were second too none. He was concerned about the many unjust issues we have in our society and belted them out to those who would listen.

When it came to politics he was as honest and relentless as ever and pointed out issues about things like war with his 'bigger dick foreign policy theory', stating that war is merely based on the ‘mines bigger then yours’ ideology. Although he was extremely brash and honest there was always a greater picture to be seen in his humour.

Author, professor, long-time Democratic and progressive activist and friend, Robert S. McElvaine states; "George Carlin was a thinking person's comic. Suddenly, in the midst of listening to his nonstop vulgarity, one would realize that he was making a very serious point about society, war, and human failings."

I was a little uncomfortable while watching his show one time with my parents when I was younger and he did his "7 Words you can’t say on TV." But that was just it he was trying to point out the irony in how rules and decisions are made in our society and how we can never stop speaking out against the bullshit we are fed day in and day out.

But I think McElvaine finished his letter best when he said to Carlin;
"You have enriched the life of the nation and the world--and that's no joke."

R.I.P George Carlin May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008.

The Evil one; McCain’s chief strategist, Charlie Black, stated that the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December saved the fossilized nominee (McCain) his win in New Hampshire. The fossil’s ability to ‘talk’ about the incident, which happened on the other side of the world, reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. He finished with "it really helped us." Wow he ‘talked’ about it.

Glad that the assassination of the positive and promising, female Prime Minster of Pakistan, helped out. The final bomb that the Republican asshat dropped when asked about if there was another attack on American soil; "Certainly it would be a big advantage to him," stated Black. Wow seems to remind me of some other president who stayed in office b/c the U.S. population was in fear after an attack on their soil.

Please no more of the same! It is written on the wall; DEMOCRATE FOR 08! You have to wonder what Black’s prayers are at night? Hope he dosen’t get his wish.

WOD to follow.

Trash and Euro.

Looks like Canadian lakes could end up being toxic mine dumping sites. Yup those greedheads have found a dirty little way to pump where they want to for less through a subsection (Schedule Two of the mining effluent regulations) in the Fisheries Act. The act states that it is illegal for companies to put any harmful substances to fish bearing waters. *By the way that pic is a creek in Canada in case you hadn’t recognized the trees; we are smarter then that come on!

But it seems that in Schedule Two federal bureaucrats can redefine lakes as "tailings impoundment areas." That means mining companies don't need to build containment ponds for toxic mine tailings. This in turn obviously means they can pump directly into the lakes. Another classic case of bureaucrats selling out for votes among other things.

Now on top of the surface if this becomes allowable and common, it will mean more polluted lakes reducing fresh water, and a hell of a lot of dead and/or toxic fish. But also don’t forget that bodies of water are also carbon sinks. Not sure if miners and bureaucrats know this so I will spell it out for them. Carbon sinks sequester CO2, this in turn allows humans and other life to breath, breath extends living a great deal.

They always seem to find new ways of screwing this planet and justify it as a necessity through free enterprise and providing a service. My question to these people is; when there are no lakes, forests, or customers left to take advantage of, what will you do then? Who am I kidding they probably figured out cloning as to always have poor schmucks to take advantage of.

Sports note; I can honestly say that I have not seen a great deal of the Euro cup this year. I usually make a point to take in at least a few games in the early rounds and then make sure to see the finals. But b/c of being rather busy and reduced the cable, I have not watched anything.

I have kept myself up to date by reading articles and match updates. As it stands the first of the 8 teams moving on are Group A; Portugal and Turkey, Group B; Croatia and Germany, Group C; The Netherlands and Italy, and Group D; Spain and either Sweden or Russia (depending on today’s matches). Many believe that this might be Spain’s year to take the cup. From what I have read the highlights I have seen from some of the matches I can see how Spain has a chance of winning it all. As the matches move closer to the finals tomorrow I will be making a little more of an effort to actually put some time aside to take in some of the games.

And finally the WOD; Chest day
DB flat 10-8-7 DS 8 Incline 10-8-8, Flys 10-8-8 DS 10
A new one I have come up with and will be tinkering with as time goes on as I want to add one or two more exercises to it or three to make it 8x8x8.

Draining 88's (8x8) 8 rounds of;
8 Power Cleans 95#
8 DB Thrusters 45#
8 Push-ups
8 Dead lifts
8 Rope Crunches.

Finished with a 500m row (had a timer that worked) hit 1.48.1 not bad for not rowing in a while, was completely burnt after this one and the last 75m thought I was going to puke.
A short 6K after work and yet again EAT.

Part Deux; VPism

Wouldn’t it be nice for the US to not have a criminal, sleazy, prick Vice President?

When it comes to seeking a competent person to step up and back the leader of the ‘free world’ you have to do your homework, or at least have someone you trust do it for you. You wouldn’t want to end up with a vice president that has varying values then the president or a complete dunderhead that would spend his/her time looking for ways to use federal funding as their personal piggy bank.

Those at the top of the list for Democrats are extremely impressive individuals. The three that stand out for me are Virginia governor Tim Kaine, Arizona governor Janet Napolitano, and Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius.

All have very extremely impressive resumes that contain backgrounds steeped in political experience. I truly believe the most impressive are Janet Napolitano and Kathleen Sebelius. Both law grades and both have made their way through the political minefield to become proactive governors of their respective states’.

They implement and sign bills that actually make a difference. The bills they sign reflect positive and major change in social programs. Their top concerns that they have taken action in are those that concern everyone the most; environment, education, affordable health care and a long-term economic system that takes every individual into account. I have perused their individual sites and if you are a political geek like me or in the US facing this up coming election I encourage you to check them out.

Finally we come to the longest of all long shots that would make many voters extremely happy is a candidate that although not impossible that he would join the race or be asked to it is highly improbable. Of course I speak of AL Gore

James Carville stated this week that Barack Obama should chose AL Gore as his right hand man. Could you imagine that dynamic duo? I could not even think of a better team to introduce sustainable concepts concerning a strong economy. Adding stability and creating affordable health care. An energy plan that would ultimately save individuals money as well as to sustain a long term that would include alternatives that would be affordable to all.

Carville stated that Gore has not said that he was never going to return to politics just that he was not going to run for president. He also argued that “Gore would be the right candidate for combating the biggest problem facing the nation: oil consumption.” But then again these are hard things to accomplish but I honestly think if there are two men more dedicated, passionate and intelligent to make these things happen it would be Obama/Gore.

But it is a long, long shot b/c in reality this will not happen. Luckily he has some very experienced and competent people to choose from. I would get into the republican side of things but to be honest I would rather not waste my time on them. They all hold similar values toward maintaining military involvement in the Middle East while also looking at extending there reach into other nations i.e. Iraq and Asian nations. Most of the Reps don’t give a second thought to environment or initiating a health care plan that considers single parents or the increasing amount of individuals and families that can not afford insurance or medical bills. Nope they are really not the people to be leading a ‘free nation’ what a crock of shit that is.

Part Une; The real Political Race

The old boys club, consisting of rich white men, has been running things for far too long. They control the markets, the major corporations but worse of all they control nations such as the US. But this could all change as Obama could be the next president making him the first African American president.

McCain is falling behind in popularity to that of Obama. The match up stands at, Obama leading McCain among African Americans (83-7 percent), Hispanics (62-28), women (52-33), Catholics (47-40), independents (41-36) and surprisingly blue-collar workers (47-42). Obama is also ahead among those who said they voted for Clinton in the Democratic primaries (61-19).

Does this mean victory is coming to Barack making him the first ever black president? It would look like it from the numbers above but nothing is ever a sure thing until you get all the votes counted. Oh wait let me rephrase that, nothing is a sure thing until the votes are recounted in the state that your brother is governor and you win when it was clear that the other guy won -sorry Gore.

At this point Barack is leading in the minority sector or as many rich white people would say, the sector of people that do not matter unless I need something done for me. Obama has a lead over McCain with respect to all women which is one of the more crucial groups to win. But not all women as Obama is behind McCain in the white suburban women group (Protected wealthy women).

With white men -makes me sick to be one sometimes well no I guess not as I am not a greedy prick lacking in essential morals. Barack is 20 points behind in this demographic and that is not good at all.

What terrifies is this ideology; I would rather live with the devil I know then the one I don’t. White men have the power to pressure and influence the vote to obtain more of the same with McCain and will try to convince voters that they can be assured that they will at least be safe and have a strong nation that spreads democracy with a white man in office.

It is then as simple as separating the voters and those who sway votes. They break down as follows; first the extremely powerful i.e. elitists, lobbyist and the so on. The second being the people waiting to make a decision based on late popularity poles closing into November. And finally those affected by the decisions made and broad casted by groups one and two.

Sorry but I feel the ballot box is half empty as the track record proves that the white machine will win again. White men and suburban women voted and kept in Bush for so long it will happen again. Funny these are the people that say "we are patriots we want to free foreign nations from tyranny and help our fellow nations and spread democracy among all the lands…" and in the same breath "A black president are you mentally ill? No way would I let a funny named terrorist looking guy be commander and chief!" But what if he is good for your nation as a whole? Oh right you want to remain wealthy and at the top not a more even an fair economy, got it.

But what makes a terrorist a terrorist? Is it the colour of their skin? Or is it based on their intent and actions? Most intelligent people define terrorist as; "An agent of a sub-national group who uses premeditated, politically motivated violence against non-combatant targets." Many North Americans -mainly white of course- believe a terrorist is merely someone of a different ethnic background and/race and from ‘over there’ even if they can’t point to ‘over there’ on a map, hell they probably couldn’t point out the US.

Think I am joking? Read this; Fox Anchor Calls Obama Fist Pound A "Terrorist Fist Jab". There are many stories like this.

For the moment my personal forecast on this election will be kept to myself other then a few possibilities. I will say that although I wanted Clinton in at the beginning Obama changed my mind after I watched all the debates and read both their platforms. I just don't see him making it past the gauntlet of white power, money and ignorance -before you yell at me I am obviously not talking about every white person.
Finally whoever gets in will have to deal with the cluster fuck that Bush created and as they step into the oval office will require chest high fishing waders just to slip through the putrid stench of bullshit.
Pat Deux coming soon! -much more interesting then this ramble...

The More Things Change the More they Stay the Same.

The other night I was watching David Suzuki deliver a speech at a school in Ottawa. I studied a great deal of his theories and papers in University and always thought that he was a fascinating man who should truly be revered and honored.

I focused on his description on caveman days in an African desert as man was just learning how to sustain life. Suzuki stated that one specific characteristic separated humans from their animal counterparts; foresight. Humans understood the idea of planning and future and thus had the ability to become a ‘super race’. "We remembered, we looked ahead and took advantage of the best passage for survival." -Suzuki.

Suzuki’s approach is rather obvious; humans have the ability to see into the future -relatively speaking- and need to take action on anthropogenic impacts as opposed to ignoring them. No matter if it is the political party in power or the average person, we all need to make proper decisions and actions if change is to be positive.

Proof of human excess was expressed in examples such as; the size of a Canadian family has decreased by 50% but the average size of homes has doubled. What's the reason for the extra space? People tend to live with more stuff just b/c they have greater access to it and justify the ‘need’ for these items. Where homes made bigger b/c furniture was? Or was it the other way around? Either way it was done so that people would buy more!

After the speech I began relating the idea of a ‘super race’ that developed using foresight to all terms of human evolution. In an article I was reading it discused that when the Cartesian world view came into existence humanity began worshiping itself. This is supported in our acts of predation and the ongoing belief that everything on earth -including natural resources- BELONGS to humans. We screwed up while implementing this ideology.

Also the downfall continued when institutions started lending money that was created out of nothing. Deficits and government spending grow as currency is printed on nothing more then monopoly money; it is an illusion of a flowing economy that "…sabotaged the balance (mizan) of the natural world." It doesn’t take a genius to realize that if this keeps up there will be nothing left on the earth to produce and we will be living on a completely barren planet.

‘Natural world’ is key here. Why? In the beginning of existence "Excess in the natural order was contained because it was biodegradable." Does this sound like what we as humans do? No, we use natural resources until they are completely spent and replace them with pollution.

"When old civilizations, however opulent, profligate, greedy, or brutal, died, the forests just grew over them or the sands covered their traces. They left no pollutants, damaging poisons or nuclear waste. By contrast, and assuming we survive as a species, archaeologists excavating our present rampant civilization are going to have wear radiation protection suits."

Now finally my point. Although the earth is taking an extreme beating from poor human decision making with reference to consumption and progress that -ironically major polluters should realize- will wipe us both out, the world is smart.

After studying glacier and inter-glacier time periods and looking at the environmental and geographical history, we learned there is an ongoing trend. At present the earth is changing to respond to this change. If we use history and something called ‘foresight’ it seems logical to believe that the Earth has evolved and realized that for its own survival it must drastically reduce the human population.

Think of all the pollution and degradation humans have caused. Then think of the earth evolving and implementing disasters such as in Burma, China’s earthquakes, the 2006 Tsunami in Thailand, the list goes on. The earth is continuously removing massive populations of humans. No I am not running around screaming "the sky is falling and the oceans will swallow us whole" actually oceans swallowing us?; see Tsunami Thailand.

I am merely discussing the possibility that the Holocene extinction event -mass ongoing species extension that includes major mammals- which we live in now, has been accelerated due to anthropogenic activities. And I believe that there is a possibility that the Earth is attempting to cleans itself of its worse enemy; humans.

Now I don’t believe that massive amounts of people deserve to die, not at all. Especially when the destruction is normally in third world nations or poorer areas. Those most accountable for environmental degradation Western Nations never really feel the affect -rich nations account for 20% of the population and we consume 80% of its natural resources; APPALING. Again I don’t want people to die but it seems to me that while looking at all the evidence in climate change, natural disasters and an organism ability to adapt for survival, that the earth could do this on its own as well.

So although my belief of the earth attempting to protect its own survival against its major enemy, us, is not a science and no I am not saying that the earth is specifically out to get us -although it deserves to- it seems possible that the earth has entered its on evolutionary process as a result of anthropogenic activity and through remembering, looking ahead it is taking advantage of its best passage for survival.

Green Earth.

Happy earth day to all. Today should be a reminder of all the practices we should maintain through out the entire year. Most of us do a good job at being earth friendly but need reminders of the simple things.
  1. Don’t replace items in your home until absolutely necessary.
  2. Buy a fuel efficient car.
  3. Shut-off appliances and lights that are not being used.
  4. Shut-down your work computer when you leave for the day. That one drives me nuts no reason to leave them on.
  5. Purchase a reusable water bottle.
  6. Try not to purchase items with excessive packaging.
  7. Don’t purchase items that contain individual packed items within the packed item i.e. case of juices, buy one or two big bottles or powder and put it in your reusable bottle.
  8. Use Tupperware dishes instead of saran wrap or foil. This can be used to store stuff in the fridge and to pack your lunch. Although I get the odd comment of the size of my lunch bag each day at least I know that half of it isn’t going directly into the garbage.
  9. If you have the ability start a compost.
  10. Remember to REDUCE, REUSE, and then RECYCLE.
  11. Reduce the amount of stuff you buy, for a detailed entry and links on this take a look at an older entry from the Vanilla Bean Café. "The things you own end up owning you" -Tyler
  12. Implement something in your life to help that you must maintain every day.

Being educated and reading through what some companies state they do to be environmental is imperative. On the surface they may seem to be earth friendly but deeper the real facts can be found.

Example ethanol fuel over unleaded. Ethanol has been said to be friendlier to the environment as it is made ‘naturally’. That is completely false, sure crops are being used to produce fuel but it removes productive agricultural land for food stocks. It reduces emissions doesn’t it? Although it reduces emissions from your vehicle ethanol is actually worse then unleaded as is takes a greater amount of energy and fuel to produce ethanol. So don’t use it.

Speaking of fuel; although gas prices might hurt the pocket book, think of its advantages. More people are choosing to take the bus, walk or ride their bike. Although I am not looking forward to the prices as I drive to the ADK this summer, I am happy gas prices rise as more people will have to stop using their vehicles’ unnecessarily.

New report; Bamboo is becoming an excellent alternative in the production of clothing for hiking and other sports. Reason being; little to no maintenance to grow, grows fast (up to 3ft/day), requires no irrigation, this is the big one -ex: see Aral Sea, had an environmental sciences prof teach us about this tragedy in detail.

But what backpacker magazine found was that production of bamboo was harmful. To break down bamboo powerful chemicals are used and emit toxins into the atmosphere. There is an alternative by using alcohol in a closed system. Some companies have chosen to use the safer method but as anything cost is always a factor and the morally defunct corporations will choose the more harmful method as long as it saves them a buck or two. So if a company states "we care about the environment we use BAMBOO!" find out how they produce before you buy it.

As consumers it is our responsibility to try and shopr less and shop smart. We also need to attempt to get companies on track to hopefully create standards implementing environmentally sustainable methods no matter the costs. B/c in the end the alternative will cost, and I am not speaking financially, us all a great deal more then just a couple bucks.

Feel free to add your tips on being green.

Have happy Green year.

IOC Requires Definition for "International".

"International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge on Tuesday as saying he was ‘deeply saddened’ by the demonstrations and that the IOC's executive board would discuss abandoning the international leg in a meeting Friday."

Love progress. Many people, who were set to attend the torch relay, as well as the Olympics themselves, are now not doing so. Growing numbers of people who have purchased tickets to the event in China have stated hey are not going. Along with this are those traveling in china that have been deciding to go home early from their travels and are leaving China in support of Tibet.

Who says people can not make a difference when change is needed? It might only be a small step but due to protest during the Olympic torch run, the IOC is considering the cancellation of the Olympic torches international journey. This came after great protests in London, Paris, and those brave climbers scaling their way up the Golden Gate Bridge to attach flags and a sign that read "One World, One Dream" and "Free Tibet '08".

IOC member Dick Pound stated "Nobody likes what goes on in Tibet. We'd like to see a solution for it, but to build your entire response to the China-Tibet problem on the back of a team of synchronized swimmers and other athletes at the Games I think is wrong and counterproductive."

I see these statements as completely near-sighted and selfish as Pound merely doesn’t want to see the Olympics tarnished -like that hasn’t happened before. Olympic committee members like Pound, state that these actions involving boycotts and protesting the torch run are "wrong and counterproductive". How does that even make sense?

While people are dieing and struggling b/c a) their own government is not helping, but more importantly, b) even if they were to attempt to help their country the oppression and struggle that the Tibet people and government endure at the hands of China, would not allow them to.

With China reaping the financial benefits of this international event, is there a better time to protest then now? All of those cameras snapping shots and filming men and women with the symbolic torch or peace and international unity. These images will be seen by millions and millions of people world wide. Can you tell me a better way to make your struggle known Mr. Pound? Do these protests actually sound "wrong and counterproductive"?

Pound along with all the other greed-head jerks are essentially telling the world;
"You want to protest, and make your unjust suffering known? That’s awesome. Just be sure to do it in your own country on your own time in your home or country side where no one will see you. And above all; do not do it in the ideal environment on an international stage that boycotts the very country that you are protesting."

Now is Pound to blame? No. Although corrupt on other levels - Is the IOC to blame? No. And I understand what he means about how the protests might hinder the Olympic athletes that have worked so hard to get here. But if you are not wanting to be positive and help the issue b/c of financial losses or altering your agenda then you are not helping either. If they (IOC) were to do something dramatic at this point, you never know it could mean making some political difference in a country struggling for freedom.

Could you imagine if the IOC was to actually help by stating that the Olympics will be banned in China unless political change is made? Now this would never happen and I would feel sorry for those athletes involved but there is an alternative to that where everyone wins except China.

Ban the 08 Olympics in China. Relocate to another country with the same facilities -as there are a few. The new country receives the money from spectators requiring accommodations, dining... The athletes still get to compete. The IOC and all the groups involved with them will still have ticket sales advertising and so on. There may be some loss on relocation and so on but any real profit could go to support those in Tibet.

I know it is not that simple but when great change and progress are required, the means are never effortless. So if the IOC and/or Mr. Pound read this please consider this as a plausible alternative.

I am Marc’s Utter Frustration and Disgust.

Ok I stole that from Chuck Palahniuk but it sums up everything so well. It must have been approximately 435 yesterday afternoon when the frustration really began to take hold. I know this b/c I was in the middle of my run at the gym.

I was laughing from a comment that a poker player made on TV. The comment isn’t important here but she stated that poker players are considered cool and are revered. I couldn’t help but laugh b/c poker advertisements attempt to make people like Negreanu, for ex., look cool for playing poker. Obviously these are marketing schemes as just being a card player doesn't make you ‘cool’.

Now where was I? oh yeah I guess that comment was important as it has bearing on the story, but means nothing in life itself. My annoyance from this comment is weakened as I realize the news had refreshed for the second portion of the hour.

I turn my attention from the self-involved poker player to focus on the TV that is presenting the news to those of us running in place like hamsters would. As I watch the images the journalists voice bellows in my earphones and I try to think of all the things people were doing at that moment in the world;

Leaving work, reading, having coffee, eating, giving birth, working, writing, sleeping, getting married, urinating, signing, going to school, shopping, failing, listening to music, making music, crying, loving, climbing, traveling, cooking thinking, winning losing; who knows the list is only limited by your imagination.

Myself, as I previously mentioned, happened to be running thinking about how annoying that comment was. Why did I ponder what everyone could be doing? As I watched the news and listened closely to the Tibet/China conflict, nothing anyone was doing in the world -including myself- mattered at that moment. The stupid comment I heard only a few minutes before didn’t even exist anymore.

Nothing seemed to matter not just due to the conflict and the repression from China. Not just the foreign policy, and political might China posses over Tibet. Not just that this sort of repression happens arounf the world by corrupt governments. Not just the fact that Warlords and political figures gain money and arms through annex-1 nations like; UK, US, CA, instead of it being channeled in a positive manner.

These were merely the background, or canvas if you will. They filled the back of my mind as I watched a non-combative, passive Tibetan Monk protester being kicked in the face by a dirty, steel toed, military issue combat boot, that was being wielded as a weapon might be, from a Chinese military policeman. The Monk was staying limp to neither invoke violence, nor to given to his oppressors.

The disgust began today as a protest march began for the release of the Dali lama after the Chinese government branded him a ‘Monster’ -article. That’s like saying Mother Teresa was a silent assassin working for the Russians -ok maybe not, but you get the point. Nuns, Monks and farmers took part in the march and as police confronted them they opened fire leaving one young Monk shot dead along with a Tibetan farmer.

The report also reveled the protests in Greece during the traditional lighting of the Olympic flame. The organizers stated that they were ‘appalled’ by those protesters who would bring politics into their beloved ceremony and country. I am sure that all those Tibetans are extremely sorry for bothering the Olympic community and its board of directors and will cease and desist immediately -screw off.

The Olympics in Beijing are a key issue and China is worried about protests and boycots. They fear of losing MONEY and are will be increasing military and police presence. There will be protests and boycotts regardless and I hope as many people out there will boycott the Olympics as it is a huge source of revenue for china that they not only don’t need, but more importantly, until they Free Tibet they do not deserve.

You must be the change you want to see in the world. - Mahatma Gandhi

Couple things.

I am scratching my head too Larry, I have no idea how you got in…???
Weather: snow -and lots of it- has been great, and especially on the hills. We have one big ski weekend left in a couple weeks at Jay peak and after that weekend I would honestly be happy with some milder temps right and sun. But this is still pretty sweet lots of snow and sun;

Trip news; while looking for things to do after our 7 day trek, I came up with one activity that I was upset we missed in Ireland; attending a European soccer or rugby match. I have come up with a few possibilities and it will all depend on where we are at certain times of the trip. A few of the games actually involve national teams such as Germany and France. So I hope to find something we can attend.

Events; I previously mentioned Ireland which reminded me that St Paddy’s day is just around the corner. As always can’t wait but not sure exactly what I will be doing although not much changes -pints and pub. It’s a Monday and I have already been asked by a few people if I will head out on the Saturday to celebrate. I just want to ask those people; are you serious?

St. Paddy’s day is one day the 17th. No matter what day it on it is not to be celebrated on any other day. To do otherwise is utter blasphemy. Unless of course you have to work nights, or have children to take care of or some sort of prior engagement -that doesn’t involve large amounts of stout- or become extremely ill.

Politics; Mayor, Larry O’Brien, and President Gorge W. have many similarities. They both love big business, using political and financial powers to get what ‘they’ want. They remove morality in their decision making -one of my poli sci profs always said that if you can remove morality, above any thing else, you will be a great politician, I think he was right.

It has been known for some time that Bush doesn’t read any daily paper -maybe just the comics (insert Bush laugh here)- and in an interview this week O’Brien stated he doesn’t either. O’Brien said he reads the business section but nothing else as he says the articles are always inaccurate. Ok there is some truth to the fact that you are not going to always find stellar award winning articles in the Citizen like you might in The New York Times for example -one of my personal favorites.

But don’t you think that it would make sense to get a feel for what your citizens’ are thinking and reading? Maybe get a feel for what the major concerns or topics are, in the hopes of using this information along with some political foresight to implement proper legislation or what have you, in an attempt to assist your local community in all sectors.

But another thing in common with Bush is that Larry is merely a businessman and both are concerned with benefiting one person, themselves. These decisions are usually at the cost of those they are supposed to be helping, us the general public. But help doesn’t come often and we continuously get sandbagged. But what do I know I am merely just another cog in the wheel.

Hunter said it best; "Politics is the art of controlling your environment."

Las revoluciones de Fidels se acaban

"I will not aspire to, nor will I accept the position of president of the council of state and commander in chief," Castro wrote. "I wish only to fight as a soldier of ideas. ... Perhaps my voice will be heard."

Big words from a weathered and ill Fidel Castro as he relinquishes his reign of power. His early political life began in law school as he lead a rebellion to overcome adversity and reinforce strong political values at the university of Havana.
Several years later he would be incarcerated for attempting to over take power of his beloved country and in his court appearance he wrote and delivered his famous "History will absolve me" speech -it is one of my favorite pieces of literature, check out the link really amazing writing:

"I warn you, I am just beginning! If there is in your hearts a vestige of love for your country, love for humanity, love for justice, listen carefully... I know that the regime will try to suppress the truth by all possible means; I know that there will be a conspiracy to bury me in oblivion. But my voice will not be stifled – it will rise from my breast even when I feel most alone, and my heart will give it all the fire that callous cowards deny it... Condemn me. It does not matter. History will absolve me."

He would later rebel yet again to take and assume power, that inspired generations of revolutionaries and frustrated 10 U.S. presidents. Castro did not believe in the U.S. philosophies and kept communist allies while the U.S. embargo was implemented and it will not be removed any time soon.

Castro was known to be a friend of former Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, and was an honorary pall bearer at Trudeau's funeral in October 2000. Canadian interests and trades remained strong over the years.

There are speculations that major changes will arise between Cuba and the U.S. with the elderly Castro out and his brother, Raul, in. I personally don’t see much if anything that will happen. If the new president is a Democrat I could possibly see some changes coming in the form of talks and hope to re-open old ties.

If the Republicans are in, the talks may begin but with McCain’s views on war i.e. being Iraq for 100 years, I am sure that it would go one of two ways; nothing would happen and remain as it has with the past 10 presidents, or there could be an attempt for forceful democracy. As Bush stated immediately;

"The international community should work with the Cuban people to begin to build institutions that are necessary for democracy and eventually this transition ought to lead to free and fair elections," Bush said Tuesday in Rwanda. "The United States will help the people of Cuba realize the blessings of liberty." I love that ‘Liberty’ yes is that what you call the U.S. free and containing liberty? HA!

Regardless of what happens I admire the ideals that Castro held when he was younger and the beliefs he held strong and close to his heart in wanting to make the best for his country against the ever powerful U.S. He unfortunately may have created a less then perfect world in Cuba along the way but regardless he was, and is, an inspiration in revolution, political intelligence and strength, along with an undying devotion to his country.

This just in; Family Day, A test in humility.

To all of those who are off today please make sure that you take advantage of a day off and do something fun with friends or family or on your own. Get out be active or whatever don’t waste this day doing nothing. It would be rather blasphemous if you chose to do nothing.

I on the other hand went into work hoping for a good day even though my wife is off along with many others. I figured there was no need to be bitter. It isn’t the fault of those who got the day off but those who implemented a poorly thought out day off that has affected many negatively.

Many employees will be returning to work tomorrow to find out that they will not be getting the long weekend in August or January 1 b/c of this new mandatory day off. Just a quick question would you rather have today off if it meant you lost the 1st of Jan or a long weekend in the middle of summer?

To make this really quick I will state personally why this is so frustrating:
-People are off and I am not.

- At the end of my precarious walk through wet and ice I thought that it would be nice to get a Grande from Starbucks and enjoy a nice tasty coffee and forget about all the crap and just get through my day. So simply walk up to the door watching my step of course and…oops the door seems to be stuck on something??? Maybe it’s the carpet or stuck on the door jamb as with the warmer weather the door expanded??? Oh wait I see the problem its stuck on the dead bolt and won’t open as they have the DAY OFF!

-Good life gyms are closed today so I can’t train on lunch and with the conditions can’t run outside.

-Ok that’s fine I will have to miss a day at the gym so I will go to the flight centre on lunch and speak with our agent about our trip and mayb…"Forts this is your unpleasant reminder from those who hate you, the flight centre is closed as well as most places downtown." Oh ok thanks, I will just sit here at my computer and do nothing.

So I would like to send a thanks to all those involved with testing my humility today including; Mother Nature, coffee shops and other stores downtown, all those who are off and finally, and most importantly, Premier Mcguinty and his Liberals.

You created a poorly thought out holiday for the purpose of gaining votes in the next election. Well Mcguinty at times like these I wish I didn’t vote libertarian as I could say that the Liberals had lost my vote.

But I am not bitter a little angry, but not bitter as these are small inconveniences and really not that big of a deal I suppose. To those who don’t have today off I propose we all meet at the pub after work and have several pints. Actually pretty much everyone I know is off today so I might be there alone I guess.

Oh well that’s fine but if I make it to the pub after work and the door is locked an there is a little sign in the window with the lettering "CLOSED, Have a Happy Family Day, we will be open again tomorrow." No matter where you are in the province you will either hear my head explode or in the very least a loud F word echoing throughout and I can tell you right now it will not be Family.
